Opening a CSV export in Excel or other programs

When you export data from TracklerPro, you receive a CSV file. If it does not open neatly in Excel, that is a common setting you can easily adjust. This article explains how.

When you export data from TracklerPro, you receive a CSV file. CSV stands for Comma-Separated Values: a universal file format where data is separated by a comma or semicolon. Because Excel does not always recognise this separator automatically, all data can end up in one column instead of being neatly spread across multiple columns.

This is not an error in the export, but an Excel setting you can easily adjust.

Opening a CSV in Excel (Windows)

  • Open Excel and go to Data in the menu.

  • Click From Text/CSV.

  • Select the downloaded CSV file and click Import.

  • Under Delimiter, check that Comma or Semicolon is selected. If not, adjust this.

  • Click Load.

Your data will now be displayed neatly across columns.

Opening a CSV in Excel (Mac)

  • Open a blank Excel file.

  • Go to Data > From Text.

  • Select the CSV file and click Import.

  • Choose Delimited in the wizard and click Next.

  • Check Comma or Semicolon as the delimiter and click Finish.

Alternatives that open CSV files correctly by default

Prefer to skip the extra steps? The following programs open CSV files correctly without any additional configuration:

  • Google Sheets β€” Upload the file via File > Import in Google Sheets. The delimiter is recognised automatically.

  • Numbers (Mac) β€” Double-click the CSV file. Numbers opens it directly with columns correctly divided.

  • LibreOffice Calc β€” Open the file and choose the correct delimiter in the import window that appears automatically.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why does TracklerPro export a CSV instead of an Excel file?
CSV is an open, universal format that can be read by almost any program. This means you are not dependent on one specific application.

  • My data is still in one column. What now?
Check which delimiter is used in the file. Open the CSV in a text editor such as Notepad and see whether values are separated by commas or semicolons. Adjust this in the Excel import settings accordingly.
